Dr. Nathan Stitziel

Dr. Nathan Stietziel is a clinical cardiologist and researcher at the St. Louis VA, with a focus on cardiovascular diseases affecting the veteran population. He is dedicated to advancing medical knowledge and improving health outcomes for those who have served. He currently serves as Principal Investigator on the two new VREF funded clinical trials, EVEREST and INCLINE.

Dr. Stitziel is also a tenured Professor of Medicine and Genetics at the Washington University School of Medicine where he directs a basic and translational science laboratory focused on identifying new therapeutic targets for cardiovascular disease. He has published more than 100 scientific articles which collectively have been cited more than 10,000 times.

After obtaining MD and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois, Dr. Stitziel trained in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago and Cardiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School. Following clinical training, he joined the faculty at Washington University in 2012.

Dr. Stietziel completed his medical degree at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, followed by a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. His work is driven by a commitment to understanding the unique health challenges faced by veterans, with a particular emphasis on preventative cardiology and the long-term effects of service-related conditions on heart health.
