An Introduction to VA Oncology Care
This resource provides an overview of the essential programs and tools available within the VA National Oncology Program. It is designed to support new fellows and clinical staff in delivering high-quality cancer care to our nation’s veterans.
Key Programs and Services
National TeleOncology (NTO)
The National TeleOncology (NTO) program makes it easier for Veterans, especially those in rural or underserved communities, to access expert cancer care without the burden of travel. Through a collaborative hub-and-spoke model, oncology specialists at VA “hub” sites connect with “spoke” locations across the country to deliver coordinated, high-quality care. Veterans can meet with their care teams from the comfort of home using VA Video Connect (VVC) or visit a nearby VA spoke site equipped with telehealth technology, bringing compassionate oncology care closer to where they live.

Clinical Pathways SharePoint
Clinical Pathways provide standardized, evidence-based guidance for cancer care. There are clinical pathways for 50+ disease types that are reviewed and updated on a quarterly basis. Documentation of clinical pathway decisions in CPRS is mandatory; training videos are available on demand.

Virtual Tumor Boards (VTBs)
Virtual Tumor Boards (VTBs) connect multidisciplinary, disease-specific experts from across the VA to collaboratively review complex cases including rare cancers and challenging diagnostic or treatment scenarios. By meeting on a virtual platform, VTBs ensure you have access to national expertise beyond your local facility’s resources. Cases can be easily submitted for consultation through the intake or referral form, making expert guidance accessible when it’s needed most.

Clinical Cancer Research Service (CCRS)
CCRS is the VA’s dedicated framework for expanding Veterans’ access to clinical trials and advancing cancer care. It brings together two key programs: Cancer Clinical Trials Navigation (CTN) and Decentralized Clinical Trials (DCT). Through CTN, providers receive support in identifying appropriate clinical trials and guiding Veterans through their options, ensuring they feel informed and confident about participation. DCT further reduces barriers by offering trial opportunities that don’t require travel to the primary study site, allowing care and treatment to be delivered locally whenever possible.

Comprehensive Cancer Genetics Service (CCGS)
CCGS supports providers in identifying Veterans who may benefit from genetic evaluation and testing, helping ensure patients receive personalized insights that can guide informed, proactive cancer care decisions.

National Precision Oncology Program (NPOP) SharePoint
The National Precision Oncology Program (NPOP) helps ensure Veterans have access to advanced molecular testing that guides personalized, precision cancer treatment. Because genomic testing is now a standard part of cancer care, NPOP covers indicated testing through contracted vendors, making it easier for Veterans to receive the right treatment, informed by the unique biology of their cancer.
